Andy Stern takes us shredding through Stevens Pass Ski Resort for the second day of opening weekend for the 2011-12 Season. They had Hogsback, Brooks, and Daisy chairs running all day on Sunday. It was a cold and partly sunny day, crisp with not much wind.

{Tri-log: 1-21-11}

Its 5:30 in the am,

Night terrors of high pressure and warm temperatures have provided me little sleep over the last few nights. If you’re in the PNW then you know what I’m talking about, la-Nina has really had her way with us as of late. My phone has been ringing constantly with updates from the crew {Nick Ennen, Joe Bosler, Forrest Burki and Andy Stern} on the road and the report is sounding like a wet dream right about now.

4 feet in the last 24 with a high of 15′ has left me scrambling to load my sled/equipment and pound out the 850 miles from Seattle to Cooke City, MT like a long-haul truck driver on the juice pulling an all- nighter.

After 14 solid hours on the road I am pulling into Yellowstone @ 3am with only 80 miles before I hit the Mecca, and let me just say those last 80 miles might of damn well been the craziest of my life. The snow is falling and the road is deep and un-plowed, the wind drifts start to reach the hood of my jacked up 4×4 and after a short while the only sign there is even a road in front of me is the faint prints of animal tracks making their way through the shallower patches of roadway. Wolves and coyotes no doubt, by the looks of things I might be spending the night out here and riding my sled into town in the morning until the road gets cleared, its getting too deep.

4 miles from town a snow plow finally passes me making the last part manageable, that was a close call, 3 hrs to go 80 miles has exhausted me for sure and I pass out in the truck for a few hrs next to the crews RV.

{Tri-log: 1-22-11}

The snow is better than I expected out here, and with another 2ft of fresh it is almost unmanageable with the sleds, we get stuck a lot but it’s worth it I should of brought my snorkel it’s so deep. Avalanche conditions are high and with the crew just having a close call with death the day before we keep it mellow and in the trees. The sun blesses us at the end of the day and we make sunset pow runs back to the cabin.

Joe Bosler Cooke City

{Tri-log: 1-23-11}

Holy shit another foot of fresh and blue skies! This is the life! The crew poaches continental breakfast @ the Super8, the hotel guy has been giving us the evil eye all morning, I think he’s on to our free loader ways I better watch my back.

We load the sleds and head out to check on some sick “AK” Montana lines the boys had dropped earlier in the week to see if they had recharged. The 100+ft drop Nick Ennen had hammered a couple days before that had left the town buzzing for several days was looking prime but as the clouds rolled in we decide to save it for tomorrow.

After that we destroyed everything we could find, pillows, cliffs, vert lines, even stacked a jump. The sledding today has been the best of my life, so friggin deep you can do over vert doughnuts and not get stuck. I am starting to think it’s time to move out here permanently.

{Tri-log: 1-24-11}

I wake up early to find it the clearest day yet. As the crew gets ready I can’t help but get excited at the possibilities that lay before us. The snow is epic and the temps cold. There is only one other film crew out here right now, “The Pirates” and we have the whole area to ourselves pretty much. The terrain is so vast we only see them @ the end of the day. Sounds like both crews killed it, we make some sunset pow runs together and log another one in the books.

{Tri-log: 1-25-11}

Everyone is exhausted, the snow has been deep for over a week and the crew has been working overtime collecting bangers.

The counter clerk @ the Super8 has had it with our 9 days of poaching the contentital breakfast and as he slams his fists on the counter yelling “you boys are eating my breakfast again? no, No, NO,” we think our time here might be coming to an end. We decide it’s time to get the hell out of dodge before we over stay our welcome and the locals revolt on us.

The crew is heading to SIA in Denver, see you there.

Montana Snowboard Trip: Yellowstone, Cooke City

Wildcard visits Montana Day 1: Yellowstone, & Cooke City.

Wildcard RV Trip Montana

Article By Andy Stern

Photos By Jordan Ingmire

Arriving in Cooke City this afternoon couldn’t have been more rewarding. Nick Ennen, Jeremy Dubs, Jordan Ingmire, and Forrest Burki squeezed in the R.V. – while Joe Bosler and I rallied my truck just behind. Accompanied by about 2 hours of sleep up at Stevens Pass, WA (trenchal downpour), we gassed up and took off on our 3:30 am departure towards The United States of Montana.

It was almost 8pm by the time we made it into Bozeman and met up with locals Shane Stalling and Nathan Murphey. We’re all running on minimum-function mode by this point – Dubs, Joe and I passed out cold, while Nick and Forrest took blast to the past and hit up the local college rager for a couple mellow keg stands to put ‘em out before the final leg of the drive.

To access Cooke City, you’ve got about 80 miles of Yellowstone National Park to drive through – it’s epic, always, but especially during the winter months. About six bald eagles, hundreds of bison, and a couple coyotes later, Cooke “City” (not a city) emerges in the near distance. Within a half hour, we had the sleds unloaded and were ripping tits deep into some of the sickest zones I’ve ever seen. Forrest and Nick got into some pillows for the few hours of light we had left, while Joe and I stacked up a jump to hit tomorrow morning. All in all, it was a damn good day.

Wildcard Movies is bringing you an all new movie in 2012 called Boarder Patrol. Our rider/filmer/photog Nick Ennen decided to let you have a sneek peek into some of his most recent video shoots on the trail to making the film. Here he presents his crew and a few freeze frame shots straight from the mix of the action.

Copper Mountain Shredfest

The Wildcard crew went to Copper Mountain, Colorado to check out the opening week conditions and jib the snowboard park. This video is starring Nick Ennen, Andy Stern, Andy Bergin-Sperry, Joe Bosler, and a couple local girls Christie Charleston and Liz Gulau.
Welcome to Copper Mountain, Colorado!

Article & Video Freeze Frames By Jeremy Dubs

In early November a few of the Wildcard squad headed out on a mission to hunt and conquer any fresh pow we could find. We didn’t find much pow yet, but the parks were Go-Time. MC Pump, Dave Grigby and the crew at Snowboard Mag helped set us up with a sweet party for the Breckenridge premier of The Saturday Night Ride. They were also our local connection and we decided to check out Copper Mountain, Colorado after we got a heads up that conditions were fun.

The Wildcard crew was ready to board Copper Mountain for the first time this season.
The Copper Catylst park looked really nice from the chairlift and we filmed a couple doubles lines as Jeremy Dubs rode up the chair.

The girlies at Copper Mt know how to shred the jibs tough, Liz Gulau busted a couple sick moves and got featured in our video. Locals everywhere, we are coming to your hill and you might be featured as well. Watch out for Wildcard.

 The park guys were all kitted up in all-black 686 gear and were stoked to rake the spot after every few hits. Colorado has some of the best parks we have ever seen and its because of people like this who are dedicated to keeping the features all smooth and dialed. The features at Copper were spread out and very hittable.

Andy Stern was throwing down some new tricks we’d never seen him do. Uniquely built jibs will challenge riders to bust new moves, and Andy had a hayday with the features at Copper, it was a good time. He threw down his second switch bs rodeo of the week and Switch 50-50 bs180ed on the ledge-box. The main obstacle to overcome was the hard landings if you touched down anywhere but your board.

Keystone, Colorado Opening Week Photos

Wildcard visits Keystone, Colorado for opening week 2010

Keystone, Colorado

Keystone, Colorado

Article and video freeze frames by Jeremy Dubs

It started with an idea to have a video premier out in Colorado for our new movie “The Saturday Night Ride” and go out to shred some early season turns and jibs with the crew. We bought plane tickets a month early hoping the snowpack would be enough to shred in early November and right we were. Keystone resort opened on Nov 5th boasting 20+ inches of snowpack and a really decent amount of park features for this early in the season. The crew consisted of me (Principal Cinematographer), Nick Ennen (2nd angle Video and Pro Snowboarder), and pro riders Joe Bosler (Arbor & 686), Andy Stern (Burton), and Andy Bergin-Sperry (Lib Tech). On Friday we hit Keystone’s Adventure Park setup all day and shot an article for Snowboard Mag. That night we met up with various homies from Snowboard Mag, Casual Industrees and Mountain Militia and had an epic movie premier in downtown Breck at a club called 320 South and hosted by Breckenridge’s own MC Pump. The rest of the week we proceeded to conquer more and more of the features and they tried to conquer us as well with our fresh summer bodies trying to adapt back into the snowy conditions. Luckily we had great sunny weather most of the time, so we didn’t have to adapt to that until we had some fresh snowfall the day before we headed back to Washington.

What did you think Colorado was going to be like before you left for the trip?
Fun. I’ve only been there once so i was stocked to go back.

What is different about Colorado from Washington State?
Hard to breathe. Everything is above alpine level so that is sick.

Who did you ride with and meet on the trip?
Some cool people from snowboard mag David/Jon/

Did the trip fulfill your expectations?
Ya I mean just to open a few hills like keystone and copper was a blast and the premier that snowboard mag threw went off.

What were your favorite moments of the trip?
Can’t remember those ones hahahaha. No it was all a good time.

Any cool tricks go down?
For sure some tippy taps and slippy doos. But ya everyone had some real good tricks.

What do you think about Keystone’s park right now?
Sick how many features they opened with and gotta love the gondola to access it.

Favorite feature in the Keystone park?
The crazy rainbow box it was pretty wild

Gondola vs Chairlift, what do you think about that?
Gondola.

How was the Snowboard Mag/Wildcard Premier Party?
def. a good time for sure.

Are you going to visit Colorado again?
def. when x games rolls around and some sia stuff.

Additional things you want to say in this article:
Thanks to everyone that came out and big thanks to the guys over at Mountain Miltia for housing us and being some good homies. Also to Snowboard Mag and Casual for makin it happen in CO.

Nick Ennen Wallride

Nick Ennen stalls out and spins over the wallride transfer feature. You can go over and get gnar or ride back down the wall. Nick and Andy Bergin-Sperry chose to air off the back to a small hard transition.

Nick Ennen Keystone

Nick on his trip:

“The difference between Colorado and and Washington is that in CO the elevation is between 9,000 to 14,000 ft and in WA you are between 3,000 to 6,000 in the ski areas. The snow in CO is a lot more dry vs in WA were have more of a wet dense snow pack. Both have their benefits. I have been to colorado early season before so I knew what to expect. Its high in the mountains, that means winter comes early. I was looking forward to be snowboarding and getting my jib on in early November. Riding in CO is more of a jibber’s paradise for park riders, while WA is more of a backcountry style riding. The two are so different but both have tons of bonuses.

We had Andy Stern, Andy Bergin-Sperry, Joe Bosler, Jeremy Dubs, as well as myself on the trip. We met up with a few other riders and crew on the trip. One of the riders that we met up with was Seth Hill. He showed us how it was done in CO. We also met up with Tawnya Schultz from Snowboard mag and she showed us around the mountain. Probably my favorite part of the trip was just getting to go rip around with the crew as well as an early start to the season.

My favorite features at Keystone were sliding the wall ride as well as the down flat down. Andy Stern threw down every other trick in the book at Keystone. Andy Bergin-Sperry put down a sick wall ride stall to 270 of the other side. Everyone threw down. Keystone’s park was sick. There were about 28 different features in the park which made it a very diverse park to get your jib on. The gondola is where it is at. Get a chance to meet and talk to locals for good info about the area.

I will be headed back to Colorado in January for SIA. Hope to see you there.”

Seth Hill Keystone Rail

We met Seth Hill up at Keystone and got some footy of him slaying the rails. He just graduated from Colorado University’s snowboard program and this is his year to shred tough. This freeze frame illustrates how excited everyone was to hit all the features and throw down for the first time this season.

Keystone Snowboard Park

Keystone set up numerous features including Wallrides, Skate bowls, and plenty of boxes and rails of all sorts. The crowd was loving it and we saw more spins than in Think Thank’s classic movie Thanks Brain.

Joe Bosler Rainbow Box

Joe Bosler noseslides the v-shaped box with sharp incline and decline transitions.

Andy Stern Slash

Andy Stern slashes out over Jackface trying to send enough snow down to open the run before taking some speed runs on Spring Dipper.

Andy Bergin-Sperry Switch Nosepress

Andy Bergin-Sperry switch nosepress spinning on the top funbox. Behind him are the closeout rail in red and the beginning of a moto jump line.

Andy BS on his trip:

“The Wildcard trip to Colorado was my second time to the state but first time I really got to shred the Rocky’s so I was pumped! The mountains in Washington were not open yet either so I was ready to find my winter legs again after a long summer full of snowboarding withdrawals. The mountains in Colorado were real fun, some sick jibs and park features with some nice long groomer runs to smash down even though I was not used to the damn speed patrol sitting around every corner. I didn’t really know what to expect with early season in Colorado, but this trip surpassed all my expectations and it was a great time to figure out how to snowboard again.

There was way too many awesome moments on the trip its hard to pick out a favorite but I’d say my favorite moments on the trip outside of simply getting on the snow was some of the epic dinners we cooked at Andy Stern’s timeshare! Joe Bosler cheffed up the most ridiculous pot of sauce for a pasta dinner, I didn’t even know what half the stuff that was in that practically overflowing pot of goodness because I am usually a meat and cheese type of guy.

The Keystone Park right now is pretty damn ill for how early in the season it is. Tons of rad jibs scattered through the park. I think my favorite trick that I saw go down was Nick Ennen hitting the wall ride hot and 270ing off the tip usually flying over at least one kid sitting at the end of the wall ride. It was near chaos riding through the park dogging all the other people riding through the park. But I had a blast ripping the keystone park all week, and it was one hell of a way to start the season off.

Thanks to Snowboard Mag the Wildcard premier for “The Saturday Night Ride” went off! Things got wild with some other sick shred videos, big ass pit-bull on stage with the rapper, and even a girl who couldn’t keep her shirt on for some reason. I cant wait to make it down to Colorado for SIA, hopefully with some snowmobiles so we can get nasty with some deep Colorado pow pow. Overall it was one crazy trip and I am stoked we made the journey…. Thanks Colorado!!”
